فإن جعلت لي عهد الله عز وجل وميثاقه أن لا تخبر بها أحدا ما دمت حيا، ولا تحدث بشيئ منها بعد موتي إلا من تثق به كثقتك بنفسك، وإن حدث بك حدث أن تدفعها إلى من تثق به من شيعة علي بن أبي طالب صلوات الله عليه ممن له دين وحسب. فضمنت ذلك له، فدفعها إلي وقرأها كلها علي. فلم يلبث سليم أن هلك، رحمه الله. And I was considering burning it during my illness. I thought that to be a sin and cut myself off from it.

فكان أول من لقيت بعد قدومي البصرة الحسن بن أبي الحسن البصري، وهو يومئذ متوار من الحجاج. والحسن يومئذ من شيعة علي بن أبي طالب صلوات الله عليه ومن مفرطيهم، نادم متلهف على ما فاته من نصرة علي عليه السلام والقتال معه يوم الجمل.
