Prefer Giving Charity to Believers محمد بن الحسن بإسناده عن الصفار ، عن علي بن بلال ( قال : كتبت إليه أسأله هل يجوز أن أدفع زكاة المال والصدقة إلى محتاجغير أصحابي ) ؟ فكتب : لا تعط الصدقة والزكاة إلا أصحابك Sheykh Toosi has narrated from Ali Ibn Hilal that he wrote a letter to the Holy Imam Ali Naqi -asws asking whether, from a portion of his wealth he can give it to someone other than his fellow believers in faith.

The Holy Imam -asws replied: ‘Do not give it to anyone other than your fellow believers’. وعنهم ، عن أحمد بن محمد ، عن محمد بن علي ، عن الحكم بن مسكين ، عن عمرو بن أبي نصر قال : قلت لابي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) : إن أهل البوادي ( 1 ) يقتحمون علينا وفيهم اليهود والنصارى والمجوس فنتصدق عليهم ؟ قال : نعم Amro Bin Abu Nasr has narrated that one day he asked the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq -asws : ‘Sometimes the villagers come to us and there are Jews, Christians and Magians among them.

Can we give to them (in charity)?’ The Holy Imam -asws replied: ‘Yes you can’. (The writer of this book has commented that this is because there is uncertainty about their religion and so it can be given to them).

Give to Three Beggars in a Day محمد بن يعقوب ، عن محمد بن يحيى ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى ، عن الحسن بن محبوب ، عن عبدالله بن سنان ، عن الوليد بن صبيح قال : كنت عند أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) ( 1 ) فجاءه سائل فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر ( فأعطاه ، ثم جاءه آخر ) ( 2 ) فقال : وسع ( 3 ) الله عليك ، ثم قال : إن رجلا لو كان له مال يبلغ ثلاثين أو أربعين ألف درهم ثم شاء أن لا يبقى منها إلا وضعها في حق لفعل فيبقى لا مال له ، فيكون من الثلاثة الذين يرد دعاؤهم ، قلت : من هم ؟ قال : أحدهم رجل كان له مال فأنفقه في ( غير ) ( 4 ) وجهه ثم قال : يارب ارزقني ، فيقال له : ألم أجعل لك سبيلا إلى طلب الرزق .

Sheykh Kulayni has narrated from Walid Ibn Sabeen who said that: ‘One day I went to the Holy Imam Ja’far Al Sadiq -asws and a beggar came by, so the Imam -asws gave him something. Then another one came along and He -asws gave him something as well. After the call for prayer one more beggar came along and He -asws gave him something too. Then a fourth one came along at which point Imam -asws said to the beggar: ‘May God give you extensively.

If a person has thirty or forty thousand Dirham and wishes to give it, he can do so but the result of that would be that he would have nothing left. He would end up being one of three people whose supplication Allah -azwj does not accept. I asked the Holy Imam -asws as to which three people are these.
