The need for interpretation arose with the very revelation of the Quran , as Allah Himself states that the (peace be upon him and his household) was sent to teach and elucidate the Book. The earliest interpreters were the Prophet’s companions, and their approach was largely focused on linguistic analysis, the circumstances of revelation, and intertextual explanations.
However, as Islamic civilization expanded and engaged with diverse intellectual traditions, multiple exegetical trends emerged, influenced by theology, philosophy, mysticism, and literalism. These varying approaches, while enriching Quranic interpretation, also led to significant methodological and ideological divergences, shaping the course of Islamic thought and religious discourse.

An Evolution of Tafsir Quran At-Tafsir (exegesis), that is explaining the meanings of the Quranic verse, clarifying its import, and finding out its significance, is one of the earliest academic activities in Islam.
It is pertinent to note that the interpretation of the Quran began with its revelation, as is clear from the words of Allah: “ Even as We have sent among you an Apostle from among you who recites to you Our communications and purifies you and teaches you the Book and the wisdom and teaches you that which you did not know .” (Quran 2:151) The first exegetes were a few companions of the Prophet, like Ibn ‘Abbas, ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, Ubayy (ibn Ka’b), and others.
We use the word, ‘companion’, for other than ‘Ali (A.S.); because he and the Imams from his progeny have an unequalled distinction – an unparalleled status, which we shall explain somewhere else.
