In truth, they have had to choose either connecting the incident to the Verse or adopting the false reports about the cancellation of the guarding of the Holy Prophet (S). This fable is however exposed by the sequence of the historical events as well as the text of the Verse.

We read the following in al-Zamakhshari’s al-Kashshaf 1/659: The meaning of Allah’s saying, ‘And Allah will protect you from the people,’ is that the Lord provides a promise of protecting the Holy Prophet (S)… against being killed only!
