I asked the same question from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) and he reported the following from his father who heard it from his grandfather, who heard it from Ibn Abbas: On Ghadir Day, Prophet of Allah(S) stood up and made a short speech. They said: “Yes you have done it.” He said: من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه ، اللهم وال من والاه ، وعاد من عاداه وانصر من نصره ، واخذل من خذله Of whomsoever I am a master, Ali is his master. My Lord!

Befriend anyone who befriends him and make enmity towards anyone who makes enmity towards him, and help anyone who helps him and leave alone anyone who leaves him alone. Then you wanted us to believe in your prophecy, and we accepted while there were some doubts. Then you requested us to pray and we accepted. Then you invited us to fasting and we did so. Then you invited us to perform hajj and we did so. Then you said that any of you who gains two hundred dirham, must give one fifth of that as charity every year, we also obeyed this order from you.

Right now you have chosen your cousin and made him our leader, saying: “Of whomsoever I am a master, Ali is his master. My Lord!
