Shiavault - a Vault of Shia Islamic Books Ghurar Al-Hikam Wa Durar Al-Kalim, Exalted Aphorisms And Pearls Of Speech Silence Silence-الصَّمْت Silence covers you with dignity and suffices as your provision for seeking pardon. 1ـ الصَّمْتُ يُكْسِيكَ الوَقارَ، ويَكْفِيكَ مَؤُنَةَ الاِعتِذارِ. Be silent and you will remain safe. 2ـ أُصْمُتْ تَسْلَمْ. Espouse silence and your thoughts will remain hidden (or will become illuminated).

3ـ اِلْزَمِ الصَّمْتَ، يَسْتُرْ (يَسْتَنِرْ) فِكْرُكَ Remain silent in your lifetime and your affair will become lofty. 4ـ أُصْمُتْ دَهْرَكَ يَجِلَّ أمْرُك. Espouse silence, for the least of its benefits is safety. 5ـ اِلْزَمِ الصَّمْتَ، فَأدْني نَفْعِهِ السَّلامَةُ. Espouse silence and you will be accompanied by safety and security; espouse contentment and you will be accompanied by prosperity and honour.

6ـ اِلْزَمِ الصَّمْتَ، يَلْزَمْكَ النَّجاةُ والسَّلامَةُ، وَالْزَمِ الرِّضا يَلْزَمْكَ الغَناءُ وَالكَرامَةُ. Espouse silence and be patient with contentment for the little provision [that you have], [and as a result] you will become great (or your will overcome) in your world and will become great in your Hereafter. 7ـ اِلْزَمِ السُّكُوتَ، واصْبِرْ عَلى القَناعَةِ بِأيْسَرِ القُوتِ تَعِزَّ(تَغِزَّ) في دُنْياكَ وتَعِزَّ في أُخْريكَ. The best silence is that which prevents [one] from error.

8ـ أحْسَنُ الصَّمْتِ ماكانَ عَنِ الزَّلَلِ. Remaining silent when speech is inappropriate is more praiseworthy than eloquence. 9ـ أحْمَدُ مِنَ البَلاغَةِ الصَّمْتُ حينَ لايَنْبَغِي الكَلامُ. Silence is dignity and idle talk is disgrace. 10ـ اَلصَّمْتُ وَقارٌ، اَلَهَذْرُ عارٌ. Silence is a means of deliverance. 11ـ اَلصَّمْتُ مَنْجاةٌ. Silence is the garden of contemplation. 12ـ اَلصَّمْتُ رَوْضَةُ الفِكْرِ. Silence is the sign of forbearance [and judiciousness]. 13ـ اَلصَّمْتُ آيَةُ الحِلْمِ.

Silence is dignity and safety. 14 ـ اَلصَّمْتُ وَقارٌ وسَلامَةٌ. Silence without contemplation is dumbness. 15ـ اَلصَّمْتُ بِغَيْرِ تَفَكُّر خَرَسٌ. Silence is the sign of nobility and the fruit of intelligence. 16ـ اَلصَّمْتُ آيَةُ النُّبْلِ وثَمَرَةُ العَقْلِ. Silence is the adornment of knowledge and the symbol of forbearance [and judiciousness]. 17ـ اَلصَّمْتُ زَيْنُ العِلْمِ، وعُنْوانُ الحِلْمِ. If there is eloquence in speech, then in silence there is safety from blunder.

18ـ إنْ كانَ فِي الكَلامِ البَلاغَةُ فَفِي الصَّمْتِ السَّلامَةُ مِنَ العِثارِ.
