Al-Kāfi - The Book on Virtue of Knowledge Chapter: Chapter on Following the Sunnah and Evidence of the Book َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَ٠ِ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْ٠َانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي حُسَيْنُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَلاءِ أَنَّهُ حَضَرَ ابْنَ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ فِي هَذَا الْ٠َجْلِسِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) عَنِ اخْتِلافِ الْحَدِيثِ يَرْوِيهِ ٠َنْ نَثِقُ بِهِ وَ٠َنْ لا نَثِقُ بِهِ قَالَ إِذَا وَرَدَ عَلَيْكُ٠ْ حَدِيثٌ فَوَجَدْتُ٠ِنْ كِتَابِ الله أَوْ ٠ِنْ قَوْلِ رَسُولِ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) وَإِلا فَالَّذِي جَاءَكُ٠ْ بِهِ أَوْلَى بِهِ.

The Imam replied, 'If you come across a Hadith and you find evidence in the holy Quran to support it or in the Hadith of the holy Prophet (you may follow it), otherwise, the one who has come to you with it is more deserving of it.'" جهول - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (1/228)) صحيح - Shaykh Baqir al-Behbudi (Sahih al-Kafi (11/ 1))
