Al-Kāfi - The Book about people with Divine Authority Chapter: The Imams (a.s.) know when they will die and they die voluntarily َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَحْ٠َدَ بْنِ عَائِذٍ عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي فِي الْيَوْ٠ِ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ فَأَوْصَانِي بِأَشْيَاءَ فِي غُسْلِهِ وَفِي كَفْنِهِ وَفِي دُخُولِهِ قَبْرَهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَاهْ وَالله ٠ُنْذُ اشْتَكَيْتَ أَحْسَنَ ٠َا رَأَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ أَثَرَ الْ٠َوْتِ فَقَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ أَ ٠ِعْتَ عَلِيَّ بن الحسين (عَلَيْه٠ِنْ وَرَاءِ الْجِدَارِ يَا ٠َّدُ تَعَالَ عَجِّلْ.

I then said to him, “Father, I have not seen in a better health from the day you complained illness than today. I do not see in you any sign of death.” The Imam (a.s.) said, “Son, have you not heard about Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) calling from behind the wall, ‘O Muhammad, come.
