Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief Chapter: Greeting with Handshake ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ ٠َّدٍ الأشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ لَقِيَ النَّبِيُّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) حُذَيْفَةَ فَ٠َدَّ النَّبِيُّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) يَدَهُ فَكَفَّ حُذَيْفَةُ يَدَهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) يَا حُذَيْفَةُ بَسَطْتُ يَدِي إِلَيْكَ فَكَفَفْتَ يَدَكَ عَنِّي فَقَالَ حُذَيْفَةُ يَا رَسُولَ الله بِيَدِكَ الرَّغْبَةُ وَلَكِنِّي كُنْتُ جُنُباً فَلَ٠ْ أُحِبَّ أَنْ تَ٠َسَّ يَدِي يَدَكَ وَأَنَا جُنُبٌ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) أَ ٠َيْنِ إِذَا الْتَقَيَا فَتَصَافَحَا تَحَاتَّتْ ذُنُوبُهُ٠َا يَتَحَاتُّ وَرَقُ الشَّجَرِ.

The Holy Prophet asked, ‘How is it, O Hudhayfah, that I extended my hand to you and you held your hand back?’ Hudhayfah then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, your hand is attractive but I am in a state of ritual impurity (Janaba) and I did not like to touch your hand with my hand that is not formally cleansed.’ The Holy Prophet then said, ‘Did you not know that when the Muslims meet and shake hands, their sins fall from them like leaves from trees?”’ ضعيف على الشه ر - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (9/73))
