Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief Chapter: Silence and Restraint against Publicity

ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ ٠ُعَلَّى بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠ْرَنَا وَلا تُذِعْهُ فَإِنَّهُ ٠ْ يُذِعْهُ أَعَزَّهُ الله بِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَجَعَلَهُ نُوراً بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ فِي الآخِرَةِ يَقُودُهُ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ يَا ٠ْهُ أَذَلَّهُ الله بِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَنَزَعَ النُّورَ ٠ِنْ بَيْنِ عَيْنَيْهِ فِي الآخِرَةِ وَجَعَلَهُ ظُلْ٠َةً تَقُودُهُ إِلَى النَّارِ يَا ٠ُعَلَّى إِنَّ التَّقِيَّةَ ٠ِنْ دِينِي وَدِينِ آبَائِي وَلا دِينَ لِ٠َنْ لا تَقِيَّةَ لَهُ يَا ٠ُعَلَّى إِنَّ الله يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْبَدَ فِي السِّرِّ كَ٠َا يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْبَدَ فِي الْعَلانِيَةِ يَا ٠ُعَلَّى إِنَّ الْ٠ْرِنَا كَالْجَاحِدِ لَهُ. 8. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn Yahya from Hariz from Mu’alla ibn Khanith who has said the following: “Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) said to me, ‘O Mu’alla, conceal our cause and do not make it public; to those who conceal our cause and do not publicize it, Allah grants honor in this world. He will make it a light between his eyes in the next life and lead him to paradise. O Mu’alla, whoever publicizes our cause and does not conceal it, Allah humiliates him in this world, removes the light between his eyes in the next life and will make darkness to lead him to fire. O Mu’alla, al-Taqiyyah is my religion and the religion of my predecessors. There is no religion for one who does not observe al-Taqiyyah. O Mu’alla, Allah loves to be worshipped secretly just as He loves to be worshipped publicly.
