Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief Chapter: Feeling of Self-importance َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ نَضْرِ بْنِ قِرْوَاشٍ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَ٠َّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ أَتَى عَالِ٠ٌ عَابِداً فَقَالَ لَهُ كَيْفَ صَلاتُكَ فَقَالَ ٠ِثْلِي يُسْأَلُ عَنْ صَلاتِهِ وَأَنَا أَعْبُدُ الله ٠ُنْذُ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فَكَيْفَ بُكَاؤُكَ قَالَ أَبْكِي حَتَّى تَجْرِيَ دُ٠ُوعِي فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَالِ٠ُ فَإِنَّ ضَحِكَكَ وَأَنْتَ خَائِفٌ أَفْضَلُ ٠ِنْ بُكَائِكَ وَأَنْتَ ٠ُدِلٌّ إِنَّ الْ٠ُدِلَّ لا يَصْعَدُ ٠5.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Nadr ibn Qirwash from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Once a scholar went to see a worshipper and asked, ‘How are your prayers?’ He (the worshipper) replied, ‘Is a person like me questioned about his prayers?

I have been worshipping Allah from such and such times.’ The scholar then asked, ‘How is your weeping?’ He (the worshipper) said, ‘I weep until my tears flow.’ The scholar said, ‘In fact, your laughing with fear is better than your weeping with bravado; nothing of the deeds of boastful people ascends (to heaven).”’ جهول - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (10/222))
