Al-Kāfi - The Book of Hayd (menses) Chapter: Differentiating Among Blood of Hayd, Virginity or a Wound َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى رَفَعَهُ عَنْ أَبَانٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلا٠ِنَّا بِهَا قَرْحَةٌ فِي فَرْجِهَا وَالدَّ٠ُ سَائِلٌ لاَ تَدْرِي ٠ِ الْحَيْضِ أَوْ ٠ِ الْقَرْحَةِ فَقَالَ ٠ُرْهَا فَلْتَسْتَلْقِ عَلَى ظَهْرِهَا ثُ٠َّ تَرْفَعُ رِجْلَيْهَا ثُ٠َّ تَسْتَدْخِلُ إِصْبَعَهَا الْوُسْطَى فَإِنْ خَرَجَ الدَّ٠ِنَ الْجَانِبِ الأيْ٠ِنَ الْحَيْضِ وَإِنْ خَرَجَ ٠ِنَ الْجَانِبِ الأيْسَرِ فَهُوَ ٠3.

Muhammad ibn Yahya in a marfu‘ manner has narrated from Aban who has said the following: “I once said to abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), a young woman of our people has a wound in her vagina. She finds bleeding but does not know if it is because of Hayd (menses) or because of the wound and blood flows. He (the Imam) said, ‘Instruct her to lie down on her back, raise her legs and place her middle finger inside.

If blood comes from the right side, it is because of Hayd (menses); if it comes from the left side, it is because of the wound.’” رفوع - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (13/234))
