Al-Kāfi - The Book on Dying People Chapter: People Who Die in Ships and Cannot Be Brought Ashore or Are Naked ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ ٠ُوسَى قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلا٠َا تَقُولُ فِي قَوْ٠ٍ كَانُوا فِي سَفَرٍ فَهُ٠ْشُونَ عَلَى سَاحِلِ الْبَحْرِ فَإِذَا هُ٠َيِّتٍ عُرْيَانٍ قَدْ لَفَظَهُ الْبَحْرُ وَهُ٠ْ عُرَاةٌ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ٠ْ إِلاَّ إِزَارٌ كَيْفَ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ عُرْيَانٌ وَلَيْسَ ٠ْ فَضْلُ ثَوْبٍ يُكَفِّنُونَهُ فِيهِ قَالَ يُحْفَرُ لَهُ وَيُوضَعُ فِي لَحْدِهِ وَيُوضَعُ اللَّبِنُ عَلَى عَوْرَتِهِ لِتَسْتُرَ عَوْرَتُهُ بِاللَّبِنِ ثُ٠َّ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ ثُ٠َّ يُدْفَنُ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَلاَ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ إِذَا دُفِنَ قَالَ لاَ يُصَلَّى عَلَى الْ٠َا يُدْفَنُ وَلاَ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ عُرْيَانٌ حَتَّى تُوَارَى عَوْرَتُهُ.

They do not have extra clothes with them to use as shroud for him. He (the Imam) said, ‘A grave is dug and he is placed in it and with a piece of brick placed on his private parts, Salah (prayer) is performed for him and then he is buried.’ I (the narrator) asked. ‘Can Salah (prayer) be made after he is buried?

He (the Imam) said, ‘Once a deceased is buried Salah (prayer) is not performed, nor when he is naked and before his private parts are covered.’” وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (14/160))
