Al-Kāfi - The Book of Prayer

Chapter: One Who Goes to Sleep Before Performing Salah (Prayer) or Forgets َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْ٠َانِ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الأعْرَجِ قَالَ سَ٠ِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلا٠َ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) عَنِ الصُّبْحِ وَالله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنَا٠َهُ حَتَّى طَلَعَتِ الشَّ٠ْسُ عَلَيْهِ وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ رَحْ٠ِنْ رَبِّكَ لِلنَّاسِ أَ لاَ تَرَى لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلاً نَا٠َ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّ٠ْسُ لَعَيَّرَهُ النَّاسُ وَقَالُوا لاَ تَتَوَرَّعُ لِصَلَوَاتِكَ فَصَارَتْ أُسْوَةً وَسُنَّةً فَإِنْ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لِرَجُلٍ نِ٠ْتَ عَنِ الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ قَدْ نَا٠َ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَصَارَتْ أُسْوَةً وَرَحْ٠َ الله سُبْحَانَهُ بِهَا هَذِهِ الأ٠9.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Nu‘man from Sa‘id al-‘Araj who has said the following: “I once heard abu ’Abd Allah (a.s.), say, ‘The Messenger of Allah remained sleeping during the time of the morning Salah (prayer) and Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, made him to remain sleeping until sunrise and this was a blessing from Him for the people.

Consider, when one remains sleeping until sunrise, people reproach him saying, “You do not avoid sins in matters of Salah (prayer).” This became a Sunnah, tradition and guideline.

If one man says to another man, “You remained sleeping during the time of Salah (prayer), he can respond saying, ‘the Messenger of Allah also remained sleeping.’” Thus, it became a Sunnah and guideline and a blessing, which Allah, most Glorious, granted this nation.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (5/65))
