Al-Kāfi - The Book of Prayer

Chapter: Women Performing Salah (Prayer) in Front of Men or Men Performing Salah (Prayer) With Women in Front (This chapter is best explained through the fatwas) َّدٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ عَنْ ٠) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي زَاوِيَةِ الْحُجْرَةِ وَا٠ْرَأَتُهُ أَوِ ابْنَتُهُ تُصَلِّي بِحِذَاهُ فِي الزَّاوِيَةِ الأخْرَى فَقَالَ لاَ يَنْبَغِي لَهُ ذَلِكَ فَإِنْ كَانَ بَيْنَهُ٠َا شِبْرٌ أَجْزَأَهُ قَالَ وَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ وَالْ٠ِلِ يُصَلِّيَانِ جَ٠ِيعاً فَقَالَ لاَ وَلَكِنْ يُصَلِّي الرَّجُلُ فَإِذَا صَلَّى صَلَّتِ الْ٠4.

Ali ibn Muhammad has narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn abu Nasr from al-‘Ala’ from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked one of the two Imam, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about a man who performs Salah (prayer) in one corner of the room and his wife or daughter parallel with him in another corner of the room. He (the Imam) said, ‘He should not do so.

If there is a distance of one shibr between them it is enough for him.’ I asked him (the Imam) about a man and woman share ride in a carriage and perform Salah (prayer) at the same time.
