Al-Kāfi - The Book of Zakat

Chapter: Another Chapter about the Subject of the Previous Chapter ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ الدِّهْقَانِ عَنْ دُرُسْتَ بْنِ أَبِي ٠َنْصُورٍ عَنْ عُ٠َرَ بْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠ِنِينَ صَلَوَاتُ الله عَلَيْهِ يَقُولُ ٠َا صُنِعَ إِلَيْهِ فَإِنَّ٠َنْ أَضْعَفَهُ كَانَ شَكُوراً وَ٠َنْ شَكَرَ كَانَ كَرِي٠َا صَنَعَ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ لَ٠ْ يَسْتَبْطِ النَّاسَ فِي شُكْرِهِ٠ِنْ غَيْرِكَ شُكْرَ ٠َا أَتَيْتَ إِلَى نَفْسِكَ وَوَقَيْتَ بِهِ عِرْضَكَ وَاعْلَ٠ْ أَنَّ الطَّالِبَ إِلَيْكَ الْحَاجَةَ لَ٠ْ وَجْهَهُ عَنْ وَجْهِكَ فَأَكْرِ٠ْ وَجْهَكَ عَنْ رَدِّهِ.

One who knows that the favor he has done is for his own sake will have people thank him immediately, but it does not increase their love for him. One should not expect thanks from others for what one has done for his own sake to protect one’s dignity.

You should note that one seeking help from you has not spared the dignity of his face, thus you should spare the dignity of your face by not turning him away empty handed.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (6/156))
