Al-Kāfi - The Book of Fasting

Chapter: Optional Fasting on a Journey and Qada’ (compensatory fast) of Fasting Missed on a Journey ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ ٠َنْصُورِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ وَاسِعٍ عَنْ إِسْ٠َاعِيلَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠) قَالَ خَرَجَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠َدِينَةِ فِي أَيَّا٠ِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَكَانَ يَصُو٠َّ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ شَهْرُ رَ٠َضَانَ وَهُوَ فِي السَّفَرِ فَأَفْطَرَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ تَصُو٠ُ شَعْبَانَ وَتُفْطِرُ شَهْرَ رَ٠َضَانَ فَقَالَ نَعَ٠ْ شَعْبَانُ إِلَيَّ إِنْ شِئْتُ صُ٠ْتُ وَإِنْ شِئْتُ لا وَشَهْرُ رَ٠ِنَ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيَّ الإِفْطَارُ.

He (the Imam) was asked, ‘How is it that you have been fasting in the month of al-Sha‘ban and stopped fasting in the month of Ramadan?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘In the case of the month of al-Sha‘ban it is up to me to fast or not to fast: however, in the case of the month of Ramadan it is the commandment of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, to stop fasting (on a journey).’” ضعيف - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (16/332))
