Al-Kāfi - The Book of Haj

Chapter: What Suffices for Hajjata al-Islam and What Does Not Suffice? (The following Chapter is best explained by fatwa).

ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َحْبُوبٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنْ ضُرَيْسٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠) قَالَ فِي رَجُلٍ خَرَجَ حَاجّاً حَجَّةَ الإِسْلا٠َاتَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَقَالَ إِنْ ٠َاتَ فِي الْحَرَ٠ِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ حَجَّةُ الإِسْلا٠َاتَ دُونَ الْحَرَ٠ِ فَلْيَقْضِ عَنْهُ وَلِيُّهُ حَجَّةَ الإِسْلا٠10.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Mahbub from ibn Ri’ab from Durays who has said the following: “This is about a man who travels for Hajjahta al-Islam and dies on the way. Abu Ja‘far (a.s.), has said, ‘If he dies in al-Haram (the sacred area), it is sufficient for Hajjahta al-Islam.

However, if he dies outside al-Haram (the sacred area), then his guardians should complete, Qada’ (compensatory for) Hajjahta al-Islam, on his behalf.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (7/162))
