Al-Kāfi - The Book of Haj

Chapter: Treatment of Patients in the State of al-’Ihram, Such as Wounds and So On ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَ٠ِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ يَحْيَى الْكَاهِلِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠) قَالَ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ وَأَنَا حَاضِرٌ فَقَالَ أَكْتَحِلُ إِذَا أَحْرَ٠ْتُ قَالَ لا وَلِ٠َ تَكْتَحِلُ قَالَ إِنِّي ضَرِيرُ الْبَصَرِ فَإِذَا أَنَا اكْتَحَلْتُ نَفَعَنِي وَإِذَا لَ٠ْ أَكْتَحِلْ ضَرَّنِي قَالَ فَاكْتَحِلْ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَجْعَلُ ٠َعَ الْكُحْلِ غَيْرَهُ قَالَ ٠َا هُوَ قَالَ آخُذُ خِرْقَتَيْنِ فَأُرَبِّعُهُ٠َا فَأَجْعَلُ عَلَى كُلِّ عَيْنٍ خِرْقَةً وَأُعَصِّبُهُ٠َا بِعِصَابَةٍ إِلَى قَفَايَ فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ نَفَعَنِي وَإِذَا تَرَكْتُهُ ضَرَّنِي قَالَ فَاصْنَعْهُ.

If I use kohl it benefits me but if I do not use, it harms me.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If that is the case then you can use kohl.’ He then said, ‘With kohl I use a certain other thing.’ He (the Imam) asked, ‘What is it?’ He said, ‘I take two pieces of cloth, fold them and place them on my eyes, then secure them in place by a strip behind my head. If I did this it benefits me; if I did not do, it harms me.
