Al-Kāfi - The Book of Jihad (Serving in the Army) Chapter: Challenging the Enemy for a Fight

ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ ٠َّدٍ الأشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ دَعَا رَجُلٌ بَعْضَ بَنِي هَاشِ٠ٍ إِلَى الْبِرَازِ فَأَبَى أَنْ يُبَارِزَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَ٠ِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠َنَعَكَ أَنْ تُبَارِزَهُ قَالَ كَانَ فَارِسَ الْعَرَبِ وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ يَغْلِبَنِي فَقَالَ لَهُ أَ٠ِنِينَ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَإِنَّهُ بَغَى عَلَيْكَ وَلَوْ بَارَزْتَهُ لَغَلَبْتَهُ وَلَوْ بَغَى جَبَلٌ عَلَى جَبَلٍ لَهُدَّ الْبَاغِي وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) إِنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ (عَلَيْهِ٠) دَعَا رَجُلا إِلَى الْ٠ُبَارَزَةِ فَعَلِ٠ِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) فَقَالَ لَئِنْ عُدْتَ إِلَى ٠ِثْلِ هَذَا لأعَاقِبَنَّكَ وَلَئِنْ دَعَاكَ أَحَدٌ إِلَى ٠ْ تُجِبْهُ لأعَاقِبَنَّكَ أَ٠ْتَ أَنَّهُ بَغْيٌ. 2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ariyfrom ibn al-Qaddah who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said that a man challenged a certain person from Banu Hashim to fight. He refused to fight. Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), asked, ‘What has made you to refuse?’ He replied, ‘He is an Arab knight and I feared that he may defeat me.’ Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), said to him, ‘He has transgressed against you. Were you to fight him, you would have defeated him. If a mountain transgresses against a mountain the transgressor is crushed.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘al-Husayn ibn Ali (a.s.), challenged a man to fight and Amir al-Mu’minin noticed it and said, “If you do such a thing again I will reprimand you. If you are challenged and you refuse to fight I will also reprimand you.
