Al-Kāfi - The Book of Jihad (Serving in the Army) Chapter: It is Detestable to Expose One’s Self to What He Cannot Endure ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ ٠ُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُ٠َرَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) لا يَنْبَغِي لِلْ٠ِنِ أَنْ يُذِلَّ نَفْسَهُ قُلْتُ بِ٠َا يُذِلُّ نَفْسَهُ قَالَ يَدْخُلُ فِي٠5.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘A believer must not humiliate himself.’ I then asked, ‘In what way can he humiliate himself?’ He (the Imam) replied, ‘He can do so by involving himself in things that he cannot do.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (8/412))
