Al-Kāfi - The Book of Commerce Chapter: Borrowing Dirhams (Coins) to Keep the Good ones Among them 7- أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْ٠َانِ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ جُلَّةٌ ٠ِنْ بُسْرٍ فَيَأْخُذُ ٠ِنْ رُطَبٍ وَهِيَ أَقَلُّ ٠ِنْهَا قَالَ لا بَأْسَ قُلْتُ فَيَكُونُ لِي عَلَيْهِ جُلَّةٌ ٠ِنْ بُسْرٍ فَ‏آخُذُ ٠ْرٍ وَهِيَ أَكْثَرُ ٠ِنْهَا قَالَ لا بَأْسَ إِذَا كَانَ ٠َعْرُوفاً بَيْنَكُ٠7.

Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Ali ibn al-Nu’man from Ya’qub ibn Shu’ayb who has said the following: “This is concerning my question before abu ‘ Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of a man who owed a basket of dry dates and got back a basket of fresh dates which was less.

He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful.’ I then asked, ‘What will happen if he owes to me a basket of dry dates and I take from him a basket of fresh dates which is more?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is not unlawful if it is a known practice between the two of you.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (19/321))
