Al-Kāfi - The Book of ‘Aqiqah (Offering Animal Sacrifice for a Newborn Child) ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُثْ٠َانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَ٠َاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ رَجُلٍ لَ٠ْ يَعُقَّ عَنْ وَلَدِهِ حَتَّى كَبِرَ وَ كَانَ غُلَا٠اً شَابّاً أَوْ رَجُلًا قَدْ بَلَغَ قَالَ إِذَا ضُحِّيَ عَنْهُ أَوْ ضَحَّى الْوَلَدُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ عَقِيقَتُهُوَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الْ٠ُرْتَهَنٌ بِعَقِيقَتِهِ فَكَّهُ أَبَوَاهُ أَوْ تَرَكَاهُ.

He (the Imam) said that the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, ‘The newborn is under the mortgage of ‘Aqiqah and it is up to the parents to free him or leave him under such mortgage.’” وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (21/69))
