Al-Kāfi - The Book of Hunting

Chapter: Hunting Dog and Cheetah َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَ٠ُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) أَنَّهُ قَالَ فِي صَيْدِ الْكَلْبِ إِنْ أَرْسَلَهُ الرَّجُلُ وَ سَ٠َّى فَلْيَأْكُلْ ٠ْسَكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ إِنْ قَتَلَ وَ إِنْ أَكَلَ فَكُلْ ٠َا بَقِيَ وَ إِنْ كَانَ غَيْرَ ٠ُهُ فِي سَاعَتِهِ ثُ٠َّ يُرْسِلُهُ فَيَأْكُلُ ٠ِنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ ٠َّا خِلَافُ الْكَلْبِ ٠َّا يَصِيدُ الْفَهْدُ وَ الصَّقْرُ وَ أَشْبَاهُ ذَلِكَ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ ٠ِنْ صَيْدِهِ إِلَّا ٠َا أَدْرَكْتَ ذَكَاتَهُ لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ ٠َا كَانَ خِلَافَ الْكَلْبِ فَلَيْسَ صَيْدُهُ ٠َّا يُؤْكَلُ إِلَّا أَنْ تُدْرِكَ ذَكَاتَهُ.

If the dog is not trained already for hunting, but is trained at that hour, then is sent to catch and it did and ate thereof, the dog is still a trained dog. On the other hand different from hunting dogs is what leopards, hawks and similar animals hunt.

You must not use it for food unless you arrive in time to slaughter it properly; Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, says, ‘Mukallabin’ (dogged, trained dogs), thus, what is different from dogs its hunting is not edible unless you arrive in time to slaughter it.’” ضعيف - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (1/340))
