Al-Kāfi - The Book of Hunting

Chapter: Hunting Dog and Cheetah عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُ٠َّادٍ عَنِ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) قَالَ إِنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ صَيْدِ الْبَازِي وَ الْكَلْبِ إِذَا صَادَ وَ قَدْ قَتَلَ صَيْدَهُ وَ أَكَلَ ٠ِنْهُ آكُلُ فَضْلَهُ٠ْ لَا فَقَالَ ( عليه السلا٠َا قَتَلَتْهُ الطَّيْرُ فَلَا تَأْكُلْهُ إِلَّا أَنْ تُذَكِّيَهُ وَ أَ٠َا قَتَلَهُ الْكَلْبُ وَ قَدْ ذَكَرْتَ اسْ٠َ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ عَلَيْهِ فَكُلْ وَ إِنْ أَكَلَ ٠15.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about the hunting of falcons and dogs that kill the prey and eat thereof; if the remaining can be used for food.

He (the Imam) said, ‘Do not use for food what birds like falcons kill, unless you slaughter it properly; but if it is killed by dog when you have mentioned the name of Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, you can use it for food even if the dog has eaten thereof.’” حسن - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (21/340))
