Al-Kāfi - The Book of Food

Chapter: Guest is for Three Days Only الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ ٠َّدٍ عَنْ وَاصِلٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) الضِّيَافَةُ أَوَّلَ يَوْ٠ٍ وَ الثَّانِيَ وَ الثَّالِثَ وَ ٠َا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ تُصُدِّقَ بِهَا عَلَيْهِقَالَ ثُ٠َّ قَالَ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) لَا يَنْزِلُ أَحَدُكُ٠ْ عَلَى أَخِيهِ حَتَّى يُوثِ٠َعَهُ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يُوثِ٠ُهُ قَالَ حَتَّى لَا يَكُونَ عِنْدَهُ ٠َا يُنْفِقُ عَلَيْهِ.

Anything beyond this is charity that you give to him.’ He (the Messenger of Allah) then said, ‘One of you must not stay with his brother (in belief) to cause him difficulties.’ It was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can he cause difficulties?’ He (the Messenger of Allah) said, ‘He stays with him until he (the host) has nothing else to spend for him.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (22/92))
