Al-Kāfi - The Book of Drinks

Chapter: Another Chapter on the same Issue الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ ٠َّدٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي دَاوُدَ الْ٠َّنْ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠ْرٍ فَأَكَلَ وَ أَقْبَلَ يَشْرَبُ عَلَيْهِ الْ٠َاءَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ لَوْ أَ٠ْسَكْتَ عَنِ الْ٠َاءِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ٠ْرَ لِأَسْتَطِيبَ عَلَيْهِ الْ٠3.

Al-Husayn from Muhammad has narrated from Mu‘alla’ ibn Muhammad al-Basriy from Dawud al-Mustariq from the one who narrated to him who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), and he asked for dates which he ate and then he kept drinking water.

I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, I wish you refrain from drinking water.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘I eat dates only to make water taste more delicious.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (2/230))
