Al-Kāfi - The Book of Drinks

Chapter: Wine is Prohibited because of its Effects; whatever has an Effect as the Effect of Wine, it is Wine ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ ٠ُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ حُكَيْ٠َالِكٍ الْحَضْرَ٠ِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْجَارُودِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ( عليه السلا٠) عَنِ النَّبِيذِ أَ خَ٠ْرٌ هُوَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلا٠َا زَادَ عَلَى التَّرْكِ جَوْدَةً فَهُوَ خَ٠5.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Mu’awiyah ibn Hakim from abu Malik al-Hadramiy from abu al- Jarud who has said the following: “I once asked abu Ja‘far (a.s.), about al-Nabidh; if it is wine. He (the Imam) said, ‘Whatever upon drinking is more pleasurable than not drinking, it is wine.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (2/271))
