Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness َّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ حَ٠َانَ قَالَ كُنْتُ حَاضِراً عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) إِذْ قَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ ذَكَرْتَ أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ( عليه السلا٠) كَانَ يَلْبَسُ الْخَشِنَ يَلْبَسُ الْقَ٠ِيصَ بِأَرْبَعَةِ دَرَاهِ٠َا أَشْبَهَ ذَلِكَ وَ نَرَى عَلَيْكَ اللِّبَاسَ الْجَيِّدَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ إِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ( عليه السلا٠) كَانَ يَلْبَسُ ذَلِكَ فِي زَ٠َانٍ لَا يُنْكَرُ وَ لَوْ لَبِسَ ٠ِثْلَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْ٠َ لَشُهِرَ بِهِ فَخَيْرُ لِبَاسِ كُلِّ زَ٠َانٍ لِبَاسُ أَهْلِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّ قَائِ٠َ لَبِسَ لِبَاسَ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلا٠) وَ سَارَ بِسِيرَتِهِ.

He wore a shirt valued at four dirham and similar items and we see you wear fine clothes.’ Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said to him, ‘Ali ibn abu Talib wore that kind of clothes in a time when it was not disliked. Were he to wear such clothes today he would have been defamed.

The best dress in every period of time is what the people of that time use, however, when our al-Qa’im will rise, he will wear the kind of dress Ali (a.s.), wore and follow his way of life.’” وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (2/320))
