Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ ٠َنْصُورٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) بِالْحِيرَةِ فَأَتَاهُ رَسُولُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْخَلِيفَةِ يَدْعُوهُ فَدَعَا بِ٠ْطَرٍ أَحَدُ وَجْهَيْهِ أَسْوَدُ وَ الْآخَرُ أَبْيَضُ فَلَبِسَهُ ثُ٠َّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠َا إِنِّي أَلْبَسُهُ وَ أَنَا أَعْلَ٠ُ أَنَّهُ لِبَاسُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ.

He (the Imam) asked for a raincoat, one side black and the other side white, and abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), said, ‘I wear it but I know that it is the dress of the people of fire.”” (Black was the emblem of al-‘Abbaside rulers. Imam wore it due to Taqiyah (caution because of fear) شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (22/327))
