Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness Chapter: Wearing al-Khazz (fur or skin of an animal that lives in water) ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا ( عليه السلا٠ِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلا٠) يَلْبَسُ فِي الشِّتَاءِ الْخَزَّ وَ الْ٠ِطْرَفَ الْخَزَّ وَ الْقَلَنْسُوَةَ الْخَزَّ فَيَشْتُو فِيهِ وَ يَبِيعُ الْ٠ِطْرَفَ فِي الصَّيْفِ وَ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِثَ٠َ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبادِهِ وَ الطَّيِّباتِ ٠4.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Washsha’ who has said the following: “I once heard abu al-Hassan, al-Rida’ (a.s.), saying, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al- Salam, in winter would wear al-Khazz (skin or fur of an animal that lives in water) decorated on both sides and a hat of al-Khazz for winter, then sell them in the summer and give its value in charity.’ He (the Imam) then read, ‘Who has made unlawful the beautiful things that Allah, most Majestic, most Glorious, has brought out for His servants and the very fine kinds of means of sustenance.
