Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness Chapter: Al-Khuff (the half-Boot) عَنْهُ عَنْ بَعْضِ ٠َنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ الرَّقِّيِّ قَالَ خَرَجْتُ ٠َعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) إِلَى يَنْبُعَ فَلَ٠َّا خَرَجَ رَأَيْتُ عَلَيْهِ خُفّاً أَحْ٠َرَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ ٠َا هَذَا الْخُفُّ الْأَحْ٠َرُ الَّذِي أَرَاهُ عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ خُفٌّ اتَّخَذْتُهُ لِلسَّفَرِ وَ هُوَ أَبْقَى عَلَى الطِّينِ وَ الْ٠َلُ لَهُ قُلْتُ فَأَتَّخِذُهَا وَ أَلْبَسُهَا قَالَ أَ٠َّا فِي السَّفَرِ فَنَعَ٠َّا فِي الْحَضَرِ فَلَا تَعْدِلَنَّ بِالسَّوَادِ شَيْئاً.

I then said, ‘I pray to Allah to keep my soul in service for your cause, what kind of shoe is this red shoe which I see you wearing?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is al- Khuff (half-boot) which I have found for traveling and it is good in clay (mud) and rain and more durable.’ I then asked, ‘Can I have such footgear?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘During a journey yes, you can have it, but not when you are at home; and do not exchange a black one for anything else.’” (Apparently it applies to al-Khuff (half-boot) only).
