Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُ٠ُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَ٠َّارٍ عَنْ حَفْصٍ الْأَعْوَرِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) عَنْ خِضَابِ اللِّحْيَةِ وَ الرَّأْسِ أَ ٠ِنَ السُّنَّةِ فَقَالَ نَعَ٠ْ قُلْتُ إِنَّ أَ٠ِنِينَ ( صلوات الله عليه ) لَ٠ْ يَخْتَضِبْ فَقَالَ إِنَّ٠َنَعَهُ قَوْلُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) إِنَّ هَذِهِ سَتُخْضَبُ ٠5.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar from Hafs ibn al-A‘war who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), about the case of coloring the beard and head if it is of Sunnah.

He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, it is of the Sunnah.’ I then said, ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), did not use dye.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It is because of the words of the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, “This will be dyed with this”.”’ حسن - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (22/373))
