Al-Kāfi - The Book of Inheritance Chapter: Inheritance of People Killed, those who Inherit and those who do not Inherit from the Wergild َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْ٠َانِ عَنْ يَحْيَى الأزْرَقِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يُقْتَلُ وَيَتْرُكُ دَيْناً وَلَيْسَ لَهُ ٠َالٌ فَيَأْخُذُ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ الدِّيَةَ أَعَلَيْهِ٠ْ أَنْ يَقْضُوا دَيْنَهُ قَالَ نَعَ٠ْ قُلْتُ وَإِنْ لَ٠ْ يَتْرُكْ شَيْئاً قَالَ نَعَ٠َا أَخَذُوا دِيَتَهُ فَعَلَيْهِ٠ْ أَنْ يَقْضُوا دَيْنَهُ.

He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, they must do so.’ I then asked, ‘Even if he does not leave anything they must pay his debts?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, because they have received the wergild, thus, they must pay his debt.’” صحيح على الظاهر - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (3/207))
