If a woman or a man who is neither a maḥram nor a mumayyiz child – i.e. a child who is able to discern between right and wrong – says salām to a person who is performing prayers, that person must. If a woman greets him with the words ‘salāmun ʿalayka’, he can ‘salāmun ʿalayki’, i.e. with a kasrah on the kāf.
