Do you not know that Allah -azwj has Mentioned (In the Holy Quran) those who give others preference over themselves?’ I replied: ‘May I be your ransom, indeed I have read it’. The Holy Imam -asws said: ‘If you have given him half your wealth then this is not preference above oneself, as you will both be equal. Preference means to give the other half as well.

(note: see 59:9 of the holy Quran for ‘preference’) وعن عدة من أصحابنا ، عن أحمد بن محمد بن خالد ، عن عثمان بن عيسى ، عن محمد بن عجلان قال : كنت عند أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) فدخل رجل فسلم فسأله : كيف من خلفت من إخوانك ؟ قال : فأحسن الثناء وزكى وأطرى ، فقال له : كيف عيادة أغنيائهم على فقرائهم ؟ فقال : قليلة ، قال : فكيف مشاهدة أغنيائهم لفقرائهم ؟ قال : قليلة ، قال : فكيف صلة أغنيائهم لفقرائهم في ذات أيديهم ؟ قال : إنك لتذكر أخلاقا ما ( 1 ) هي فيمن عندنا ، قال : فقال : فكيف تزعم هؤلاء أنهم شيعة .

Muhammad Bin Ajlaan has narrated that one day he was with the Holy Imam Jafar Al Sadiq -asws when a person came and greeted Him -asws . The Holy Imam -asws after returning the greeting asked him: ‘What is the condition of your fellow believers that you have left behind?’ That man praised them and said good things about them. The Holy Imam -asws then asked him: ‘How do the wealthy among them help and treat those who are in need?’ He replied: ‘Very little’.

The Holy Imam -asws then asked him: ‘How do the people in hardship treat the poor and the needy?’ He replied again: ‘Very little’. The Holy Imam -asws then asked him: ‘What kind of financial relationship do the wealthy keep with their poor brethren?’ The man then said: ‘Master! You are mentioning those things which are very rarely found among our people’.

The Holy Imam -asws then asked: ‘Then how can these people claim to be My -asws Shia?’ وعنهم ، عن أحمد ، عن بكر بن صالح ، عن بندار بن محمد الطبري ، عن علي بن سويد السائي ، عن أبي الحسن موسى ( عليه السلام ) قال : قلت له : أوصني ، فقال : آمرك بتقوى الله ، ثم سكت ، فشكوت إليه قلة ذات يدي ، وقلت : والله لقد عريت حتى بلغ من عريي أن أبا فلان نزع ثوبين كانا عليه فكسانيهما ، فقال : صم وتصدق ، فقلت : أتصدق مما وصلني به إخواني وإن كان قليلا ؟ قال : تصدق بما رزقك الله ولو آثرت على نفسك .

Amr Bin Swaid Sa’ee has narrated that he asked the Holy Imam Musa Al Kadhim -asws for some advice: ‘I hereby command you to observe piety and be obedient’. Then He -asws went silent. Then I complained about my weak financial situation: ‘By God! Such and such took pity on me and gave me some clothes to cover my nakedness’.
