Al-Kāfi - The Book on Virtue of Knowledge Chapter: Chapter on Miscellaneous Issues َّدٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ ٠َّدٍ الاشْعَرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ ٠ُونٍ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) عَنْ آبَائِهِ (عَلَيْه٠) قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ الله ٠ُ قَالَ الانْصَاتُ قَالَ ثُ٠َهْ قَالَ الاسْتِ٠َهْ قَالَ الْحِفْظُ قَالَ ثُ٠َلُ بِهِ قَالَ ثُ٠َهْ يَا رَسُولَ الله قَالَ نَشْرُهُ.

“Once a man came to the holy Prophet (s.a.) and said, ‘O messenger of Allah what is knowledge?’ The holy Prophet replied, “It is silence.” The man then asked, “Then what?” The holy Prophet said, “It is listening.” The man asked, “Then what?” The holy Prophet (s.a.) said, “Then it is memorizing.” The man asked, “Then what?” The holy Prophet said, “Then it is practice accordingly.” The man then asked, “Then what O messenger of Allah?” The holy Prophet said, “Then it is to propagate what one has learned.” يخرجه - Shaykh Baqir al-Behbudi (Sahih al-Kafi) شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (1/158))
