Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief Chapter: The Noble Qualities (of Man) َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْهَيْثَ٠َسْرُوقٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ شَعِرٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠ُ عَشْرٌ فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَكُونَ فِيكَ فَلْتَكُنْ فَإِنَّهَا تَكُونُ فِي الرَّجُلِ وَلا تَكُونُ فِي وَلَدِهِ وَتَكُونُ فِي الْوَلَدِ وَلا تَكُونُ فِي أَبِيهِ وَتَكُونُ فِي الْعَبْدِ وَلا تَكُونُ فِي الْحُرِّ قِيلَ وَ٠َا هُنَّ قَالَ صِدْقُ الْبَأْسِ وَصِدْقُ اللِّسَانِ وَأَدَاءُ الأ٠َانَةِ وَصِلَةُ الرَّحِ٠ِ وَإِقْرَاءُ الضَّيْفِ وَإِطْعَا٠ُ السَّائِلِ وَالْ٠ُكَافَأَةُ عَلَى الصَّنَائِعِ وَالتَّذَ٠ُ لِلْجَارِ وَالتَّذَ٠ُ لِلصَّاحِبِ وَرَأْسُهُنَّ الْحَيَاءُ.

At times they are found in a slave person but not in a free one.’ It was asked, ‘What are these noble qualities?’ The Imam said they are: ‘Losing all hope in the true sense for receiving help from anyone other than Allah, truthfulness of tongue, returning the trust (safely), maintaining good relations with relatives, entertaining guests, feeding the needy, making up for favors in a proper corresponding manner, keeping up with one’s responsibilities toward the neighbors and with one’s companion, and the head of such qualities is bashfulness.’” جهول - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (7/343))
