Al-Kāfi - The Book of Commerce Chapter: Selling Water for Agriculture and Preserving Extra Water of Valleys and Floods َّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ ٠َّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَ٠َيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَ٠َاعَةَ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ سَ٠ِيعاً عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللهِ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) عَنِ النِّطَافِ وَالأرْبِعَاءِ قَالَ وَالأرْبِعَاءُ أَنْ يُسَنَّى ٠ُسَنَّاةٌ فَيُحْ٠َاءَ فَيُسْتَقَى بِهِ الأرْضَ ثُ٠َّ يُسْتَغْنَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ لا تَبِعْهُ وَلَكِنْ أَعِرْهُ جَارَكَ وَالنِّطَافُ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ الشِّرْبُ فَيَسْتَغْنِيَ عَنْهُ فَيَقُولُ لا تَبِعْهُ وَلَكِنْ أَعِرْهُ أَخَاكَ أَوْ جَارَكَ.

He said, ‘Al-Arbi‘a’ is constructing, something as a dam, to hold water to water the land, then he stands free of need for such water.’ He said, ‘You must not sell it but allow your neighbor to use it.’ Al-Nitaf is a share that one has in a body of water, then he stands free of need for such a share.

And he (the Messenger of Allah) would say, ‘You must not sell it but allow your neighbor to use it or your brother.’” وثق كالصحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (9/366))
