Al-Kāfi - The Book of Belief and Disbelief ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَ٠َّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠) قَالَ الْفَقْرُ الْ٠َرُ فَقُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠ِنَ الدِّينَارِ وَالدِّرْهَ٠ِ فَقَالَ لا وَلَكِنْ ٠2.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Asbat from those he has mentioned (in his book) from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Poverty is a painful death.’ I (the narrator) then asked him, ‘Is it poverty due to deficiency of Dirham and Dinar (units of money)?’ The Imam said, ‘No, in fact, it is poverty due to deficiency in religion.’”
