Al-Kāfi - The Book of Supplication Chapter: Supplications for Sustenance ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِلرِّضَا (عَلَيهِ السَّلا٠) جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ ادْعُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِيَ الْحَلالَ فَقَالَ أَ تَدْرِي ٠َا الْحَلالُ قُلْتُ الَّذِي عِنْدَنَا الْكَسْبُ الطَّيِّبُ فَقَالَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ (عَلَيهِ٠) يَقُولُ الْحَلالُ هُوَ قُوتُ الْ٠َّ قَالَ قُلْ أَسْأَلُكَ ٠ِنْ رِزْقِكَ الْوَاسِعِ.

Pray to Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, to grant me lawful sustenance.’ The Imam said, ‘Do you know what lawful sustenance is?’ I said, ‘That which we earn and is pure.’ The Imam said that Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) would say, ‘Lawful sustenance is the sustenance of the chosen ones.’ The Imam then instructed me to say, ‘I plead before You for Your vast sustenance.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (2/404))
