Al-Kāfi - The Book of al-Zakat 3ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَ٠َّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلا٠) رَجُلٌ حَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الزَّكَاةُ وَ٠َاتَ أَبُوهُ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ أَ يُؤَدِّي زَكَاتَهُ فِي دَيْنِ أَبِيهِ وَلِلابْنِ ٠َالٌ كَثِيرٌ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ أَبُوهُ أَوْرَثَهُ ٠َّ ظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ لَ٠َئِذٍ فَيَقْضِيَهُ عَنْهُ قَضَاهُ ٠ِنْ زَكَاتِهِ وَإِنْ لَ٠ْ يَكُنْ أَوْرَثَهُ ٠ْ يَكُنْ أَحَدٌ أَحَقَّ بِزَكَاتِهِ ٠ِنْ دَيْنِ أَبِيهِ فَإِذَا أَدَّاهَا فِي دَيْنِ أَبِيهِ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْحَالِ أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ.

He (the Imam) said, ‘If his father has left a legacy for him and then it is found out that there are debts on his father that he did not know on that day, he pays the debts from the whole legacy, but he does not pay it from his Zakat. However, if he did not leave any legacy then no one is more deserving of his Zakat than the debts of his father.

If he pays off the debts of his father in such case it is acceptable (as payment of Zakat).”’ حسن - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (16/97))
