Al-Kāfi - The Book of Zakat

Chapter: Understanding Generosity and Munificence ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ ٠َحْبُوبٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ ٠َا حَدُّ السَّخَاءِ فَقَالَ تُخْرِجُ ٠َالِكَ الْحَقَّ الَّذِي أَوْجَبَهُ الله عَلَيْكَ فَتَضَعُهُ فِي ٠2.

A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Mahbub from certain individuals of our people who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), ‘What is the limit of generosity?’ The Imam replied, ‘It is to pay what Allah has made obligatory on you to pay to properly deserving recipients.’” شهور - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (6/168))
