Al-Kāfi - The Book of Fasting

Chapter: Excellence of Fasting in the Month of Shaman, Continuing Such Fast to Connect it with the Month of Ramadan, and Three Days of Fasting Every Month َّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُلْوَانَ عَنْ عَ٠ْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَ٠) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) يَصُو٠ُ شَعْبَانَ وَرَ٠َا وَيَنْهَى النَّاسَ أَنْ يَصِلُوهُ٠َا وَكَانَ يَقُولُ هُ٠َا شَهْرَا الله وَهُ٠َا كَفَّارَةٌ لِ٠4.

Ahmad ibn Muhammad has narrated from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Husayn ibn ‘Ulwan from ‘Amr ibn Khalid who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.), has said, ‘The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, would fast during the month of Sha‘ban and the month of Ramadan and continue fasting. He (the Messenger of Allah) prohibited people to continue fasting without a break (after sunset).

He also said, ‘These two are the months of Allah and this (fasting in the two months) is expiation of the sins before and after these two months.’” وثق وقد يعد ضعيفا - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (16/256))
