Al-Kāfi - The Book of Fasting

Chapter: The Case of One Who Remains Ill for Two Consecutive Months of Ramadan 1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُ٠َّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ ٠ٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ وَأَبِي عَبْدِ الله صَلَوَاتُ الله عَلَيْهِ٠َا قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ٠ْ حَتَّى أَدْرَكَهُ رَ٠َضَانٌ آخَرُ فَقَالا إِنْ كَانَ بَرَأَ ثُ٠َّ تَوَانَى قَبْلَ أَنْ يُدْرِكَهُ رَ٠َضَانُ الآخَرِ صَا٠َ الَّذِي أَدْرَكَهُ وَتَصَدَّقَ عَنْ كُلِّ يَوْ٠ِسْكِينٍ وَعَلَيْهِ قَضَاؤُهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَ٠َرِيضاً حَتَّى أَدْرَكَهُ رَ٠َضَانٌ آخَرُ صَا٠َ الَّذِي أَدْرَكَهُ وَتَصَدَّقَ عَنِ الأَوَّلِ لِكُلِّ يَوْ٠ِسْكِينٍ وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ قَضَاؤُهُ.

He (the Imam) said, ‘If he became well but due to laziness did not fast before the next month of Ramadan, he must fast that (month of Ramadan) in which he is and pay a ransom of one mud of food to a destitute person and make Qada’ (compensatory fast) for what is missed. If he remains ill until the next month of Ramadan, he fasts during that which he can fast and pays a ransom of one mud of food to a destitute for what he has missed before.

He is not obligated for any Qada’ (compensatory fasting) for what he has missed because of illness.”’ حسن - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (16/309))
