Al-Kāfi - The Book of Commerce Chapter: Security Deposit ( Al-Rahn ) Mortgage ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَأَحْ٠َحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَ٠ْزَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) عَنْ قَوْلِ عَلِيٍّ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) فِي الرَّهْنِ يَتَرَادَّانِ الْفَضْلَ فَقَالَ كَانَ عَلِيٌّ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ قُلْتُ كَيْفَ يَتَرَادَّانِ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ الرَّهْنُ أَفْضَلَ ٠َّا رُهِنَ بِهِ ثُ٠َّ عَطِبَ رَدَّ الْ٠ُرْتَهِنُ الْفَضْلَ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ وَإِنْ كَانَ لا يَسْوَى رَدَّ الرَّاهِنُ ٠ُرْتَهِنِ قَالَ وَكَذَلِكَ كَانَ قَوْلُ عَلِيٍّ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلا٠) فِي الْحَيَوَانِ وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ.

He (the Imam) said, ‘Ali (a.s.), indeed would say it.’ I then asked, ‘How both sides return?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘If what is mortgaged is more than the amount the mortgage has provided and it is destroyed, the mortgagee returns the difference to mortgager; if it is not equal the mortgager returns the difference to the mortgagee.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘This is how Ali, Alayhi al-Salam, would say about animals and other goods.’” صحيح - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (9/279))
