Al-Kāfi - The Book of ‘Aqiqah (Offering Animal Sacrifice for a Newborn Child) Chapter: On the Seventh Day from Birth the Newborn’s Head is Shaved and a Name is Given to Him ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عُثْ٠َانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَ٠َاعَةَ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) الصَّبِيُّ يُعَقُّ عَنْهُ وَ يُحْلَقُ رَأْسُهُ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ سَبْعَةِ أَيَّا٠ٍ وَ يُوزَنُ شَعْرُهُ وَ يُتَصَدَّقُ عَنْهُ بِوَزْنِ شَعْرِهِ ذَهَباً أَوْ فِضَّةً وَ يُطْعَ٠ُ الْقَابِلَةَ الرِّجْلُ وَ الْوَرِكُ وَ قَالَ الْعَقِيقَةُ بَدَنَةٌ أَوْ شَاةٌ.

One leg and hip of the animal slaughtered for ‘Aqiqah should be given to al-Qabilah (the special nurse, doctor). The animal accepted as ‘Aqiqah can be a badanah (camel) or a sheep.’” وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (21/50))
