Al-Kāfi - The Book of Hunting

Chapter: A Man Shoots a Prey, Hits it and it Falls in Water or Rolls Down the Mountain ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْ٠َانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَ٠َاعَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ رَ٠َى صَيْداً وَ هُوَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ أَوْ حَائِطٍ فَيَخْرِقُ فِيهِ السَّهْ٠ُوتُ فَقَالَ كُلْ ٠ِنْهُ وَ إِنْ وَقَعَ فِي الْ٠َاتَ فَلَا تَأْكُلْ ٠2.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “Once abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), was asked about the case of a man who shoots a prey on a mountain or wall. The arrow pierces into it and it dies. He (the Imam) said, ‘You can use it for food; but if it falls in water and dies, then do not eat it.

5 ” Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad from al-Halabiy from ‘Abd Allah ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has narrated a similar Hadith. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from certain persons of our people from Hisham ibn Salim from Sama‘ah from ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has narrated a similar Hadith. وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (1/355))
