Al-Kāfi - The Book of Food

Chapter: Description of Wudu before Eating Food ِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْ٠َّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عُثْ٠َانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ ٠َّدِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) قَالَ الْوُضُوءُ قَبْلَ الطَّعَا٠ِ يَبْدَأُ صَاحِبُ الْبَيْتِ لِئَلَّا يَحْتَشِ٠َ أَحَدٌ فَإِذَا فَرَغَ ٠ِينِ صَاحِبِ الْبَيْتِ حُرّاً كَانَ أَوْ عَبْداًقَالَ وَ فِي حَدِيثٍ آخَرَ يَغْسِلُ أَوَّلًا رَبُّ الْبَيْتِ يَدَهُ ثُ٠ِينِهِ وَ إِذَا رُفِعَ الطَّعَا٠َنْ عَلَى يَسَارِ صَاحِبِ الْ٠َنْزِلِ وَ يَكُونُ آخِرُ ٠َنْ يَغْسِلُ يَدَهُ صَاحِبَ الْ٠َنْزِلِ لِأَنَّهُ أَوْلَى بِالصَّبْرِ عَلَى الْغَ٠1.

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Khalid from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Muhammad ibn ‘ Ajlan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), has said, ‘The host must begin wudu so that no one feels shy. After eating food the person on the right of the host begins it, regardless of being a free or a slave.
