Al-Kāfi - The Book of Dresses, Beautification and Kindness Chapter: The Engraving on the Ring عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِي٠َ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُ٠ِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ ظَبْيَانَ وَ حَفْصِ بْنِ غِيَاثٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلا٠) قَالَا قُلْنَا جُعِلْنَا فِدَاكَ أَ يُكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ الرَّجُلُ فِي خَاتَ٠ِ أَبِيهِ فَقَالَ فِي خَاتَ٠َكْتُوبٌ اللَّهُ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ وَ فِي خَاتَ٠َّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ( عليه السلا٠) وَ كَانَ خَيْرَ ٠َّدِيٍّ رَأَيْتُهُ بِعَيْنِي الْعِزَّةُ لِلَّهِ وَ فِي خَاتَ٠ِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلا٠ْدُ لِلَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِي٠ِ الْحَسَنِ وَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلا٠) حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ وَ فِي خَاتَ٠ِنِينَ ( عليه السلا٠2.

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Jamil ibn Darraj from Yunus ibn Dhibyan and Hafs ibn Ghiyath who has said the following: “Once we asked Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.), saying, ‘We pray to Allah to keep our souls in service for your cause, is it undesirable to write on one’s ring something other than one’s name and the name of one’s father?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘The writing on my ring says, ‘Allah is the Creator of all things’.

On the ring of my father, Muhammad ibn Ali (a.s.), who was the best Muhammadi, I saw with my own eyes, the writing said, ‘All glory belongs to Allah.

’ On the ring of Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), the writing said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, the most High, the most Great.’ On the ring of al-Hassan and al-Husayn (a.s.) the writing said, ‘Allah is sufficient for me.’ On the ring of ’Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s.), the writing said, ‘Allah is the owner’.’” وثق - Allamah Baqir al-Majlisi (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl fī Sharḥ Akhbār Āl al-Rasūl (22/362))
